When it was released internationally in 2000, Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon showed the world the rich wuxia genre. In the years since, “Crouching Tiger” has been a go-to slang for wicked kung-fu. The upcoming sequel exclusive to Netflix and IMAX theaters, Sword of Destiny, lives up to that legacy as shown in the new trailer.

Directed by renowned choreographer Yuen Wo-ping (Kill Bill, The Matrix), the Netflix-exclusive sequel stars Michelle Yeoh reprising her role with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Ip Man star Donnie Yen and Jason Scott Lee sharing the spotlight.

It’s definitely Crouching Tiger. While action cinema has slowly gone back to a wire-less practice (like in Netflix’s other project, Marvel’s Daredevil), it’s great to see action movies embracing the implausible again. I kind of missed wire action.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny will be released February 26, 2016. Check out the poster below.

Back in January it was announced that a sequel to the 2000 hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was scheduled to begin production in May. At the time, the project had no attached stars, a title, or even a director (though Ronny Yu was rumoured).

Today, the sequel’s official title has been revealed, as has its director. Yuen Wo Ping will helm Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II: The Green Destiny. Wo Ping has directed over 20 Chinese films, and has also been very prominent in Hollywood, choreographing fights for more than a dozen action films, including The Matrix and Kill Bill.

It looks like we won’t be seeing this sequel as soon as we’d hoped, however. While originally announced to shoot this May, The Green Destiny will now begin production in March 2014. Michelle Yeoh is set to reprise her role from the first film, while Donnie Yen will star as Silent Wolf.

still haven’t seen the first film, so I’m not sure how fans will feel about the news. Are you looking forward to the sequel? Sound out below!

This is some very good news if you’re a fan of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragonor martial arts movies in general.

Deadline has learned that a sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is in the works, and that the film is scheduled to start shooting this May. John Fusco (The Forbidden Kingdom) has written the script for the sequel, which is (of course) based on the same series of novels that the first film was adapted from (the Crane-Iron Pentalogy by Wang Du Lu).

The film is currently without stars or a director (Ang Lee is not involved with this sequel), but Deadline reports that The Weinstein Company is in talks with Chinese director Ronny Yu. In regards to plot, Fusco told Deadline:

“This introduces a new generation of star-crossed lovers, and a new series of antagonists in a battle of good and evil. It has a Knights Errant quality. There is an alternate universe in the books, a martial forest that exists alongside the real world, full of wandering sword fighters, medicine men, defrocked priests, poets, sorcerers and Shaolin renegades. It’s so vast and rich, and I found characters from the second and third books in the series to create a most interesting stew while being as true to the source material as I could be.”

What are your thoughts on this? I (embarrassingly) haven’t actually seen the first film, so I don’t really know what to think!
