Hello once again Mat Maniacs we are back! We hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving. We are thankful for all of you and your continued support. We catch up a little bit and take the time to put over HeelTurn! – Marc Summers . Please be sure to support our friend Marc Summers @marcsummersh20 on Twitter, and @heelsummerson Instagram.

Thanksgiving season is Survivor Series Season, but we know NXT Takeover War Games was the winner. Especially Keith Lee and Rhea Ripley thank you so much. You two made sports entertainment really feel like pro-wrestling.

We are also thankful for our friends @thesteelcagefor being the Chucky T to our Trent B. Thank you so much. We look forward to making more memories with you guys.

AEW is still staying strong with Le Champion. Is AEW now catching up with building the storylines? It feels like AEW is still finding their footing; however, the wrestling is always solid. Stay tuned for more to come.

If you were wondering whether we’re tired of meta horror yet, here’s your answer: nope! Matt chose a real banger this week, the alien-frog-with-laser-eyes romp THERE’S NOTHING OUT THERE (1992). There are punks, bros, hot ladies, skinny-dipping, a ridiculous monster with even more ridiculous weaknesses, and even a boom mic getaway. This one is a cult classic for a reason, and it’s save to say it checks all of the HMN boxes!

This Thanksgiving, it’s not just animal carcasses that will be served up… We are re-discussing the delightful holiday slasher BLOOD RAGE (1987), once a lost episode, but now a new conversation on quite possibly the only Thanksgiving horror movie out there (we don’t acknowledge Thankskilling round these parts). Let our gravyboat voices moisten your mashed potato ears as your prepare a feast for your loved ones, but be careful, that’s not cranberry sauce!

This week Julie is joined Jenny who picked the episode CharDee MacDennis from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. They discuss why Charlie is a perfect character, the parts of growing up in Philly that aren’t always sunny and if they’d ever want to play this crazy and frankly dangerous game.

Put-overs:

Teek – Chappelle’s Show

G1 – Disney+

MMP’s very own Hero & Villain, G1ToTheRescue & Teek Hall take you through this week in pro wrestling and recap crazy moments from Raw, Smackdown & NXT!

Also the gang recapped day one of the 6th Annual Arizona Hip Hop Festival with performances from some of the best and brightest including our very own Mega Ran

We see a lot of amazing creature designs and practical effects on HMN, so sometimes it’s nice to take a step back and see our SFX heroes’ humble beginnings…like the ridiculously dumb Rick Baker monstrosity, OCTAMAN (1971)! More or less a lower-budget, less skilled retelling of the Creature From the Black Lagoon (written by the same guy), this one is 100% due to its moment of glory in Gremlins 2: The New Batch, so thanks for that, Brian. Between the three of us, we only have 6 arms to fight Octaman’s 8, wish us luck!

Put overs:
Cap – Dolemite Is My Name
Teek – Black Jesus – RIP John Witherspoon and Charlie Murphy
G1 – Westside Gunn – Hitlers Wears Hermes 7

The gang touches on a few things from Raw and Smackdown.

Congratulations to the New Day who are now 7 time tag champs!!!  Does Kofi not care about losing the big title? The big story is the Invasion angle which saw RAW and Smackdown invaded by NXT!!!  What’s going to happen with Adam Cole, Finn Balor and The O.C. for NXT War Games and Survivor Series???  Who’s going to turn?

The bigger story is AEW full gear. The first official AEW PPV since being on TV.  The boys talk  why the lucha bros don’t need the tag titles and is Cody injured for real? Why is Kenny Omega putting himself thru so much in these non-sanction matches and much more.

It’s not every day we get to introduce a new podcast on the Geekscape Network, but this isn’t everyday! And to sweeten the deal, we’re discussing another meta horror flick from the rapidly-dwindling list of meta horror films that we haven’t hit yet: the charmingly goofy RETURN TO HORROR HIGH (1987). Our guest is Bacon from 19 Donkey Lane, a fantasy/comedy show that you really need to do yourself a favor and check out. Also, bonus George Clooney sighting in the movie, schwing!

This week Julie is joined by Erik who talks to us about the Pilot episode of Pushing Daisies (creatively called Pie-Latte). Julie and Erik discuss the whimsical nature of this short lived show, who they’d bring back from the dead if they could bring anyone back and are interrupted by a cricket.

It’s finally happened: Scott had a pick fall on Halloween, and his dream of discussing awkward brunettes and their creepy dolls came truuuuuuue! We snuggle up to the one and only MAY (2002), which most forget is seasonally-appropriate – and we’re here to remind you forever. Brian somehow didn’t watch it, even with a week extension, so Matt and Scott do their best to explain the plot to him, which sort of works a little bit. Fill your cooler with some cold ones and get spooky with us for the best day of the year, we promise we won’t criticize your kissing skills.

Neoecks: Letter Kenny – Hulu
Teek Hall: Black Phillip
ROK: Milo aka Meatloaf Happy 2nd Birthday!!
G1: Todd McFarlane

Tonight we start the show off on a somber note with the news of the passing of John Witherspoon! RIP pops!

Hello Mat Maniacs thank you so much for joining us again for another episode. We are glad to have you here. We kick it off as we always do with the put over segment, let us know if you are feeling what the fellas are into. ROK has some words regarding Kanye West and would like Mat Mania to be a Kanye free zone….what do you think Mat Maniacs? Please be sure to listen to Teek Hall’s newest release “Black Phillip”.

Wrestling time! FINN IS NXT. Finn Balor is the Prince of NXT and rising to be the king. Where doyou see Finn in NXT? Where would want Finn Balor? Is he Undisputed?

What about AEW? RIP Rock and Roll Express. Proud and Powerful are the wolves of AEW right now. Pure street, pure shooters! We cannot wait to see more of tag team matches. Congratulations to SCU! The inaugural AEW Tag Team Champions.

Lastly Crown Jewel is Thursday. Will you watch? G1 say he will, the rest of the boys say enjoy the glorified house show.

Snack of the Week: Ana Cheri @anacheri

Check out Teek Hall’s new Song – The Ritual –http://teekhall.bandcamp.com/track/the-ritual

This week on the show Julie is joined by one of her oldest friend Kathleen to discuss the pilot episode of Haunting of Hill House. This Netflix original series is a great way to ring in Halloween and it scared the crap out of Julie even when watching it at 9am on a Sunday. Happy Halloween from My Favorite Episode Of…

It’s Halloween week and time for our last horror anthology, so of course we pulled out the big guns with 2007’s TRICK R TREAT! We are joined by Jason of Creepy Co, and spend the entire episode just gushing about what a great piece of entertainment this one is. We also get into a nice tangent about Super Troopers, so don’t worry, still on-brand for us. Make sure your jack-o-lantern is lit all night long, just in case!

In the Debut Episode of the Podcast Julie is joined by her Brothers Matt and Brian of the Horror Movie Night podcast to discuss their collective favorite episode of Boy Meets World. The infamous Scream parody (that’s not a Halloween episode!) ‘And Then There Was Shawn’.

It’s week three of October, and time for a heavy sociopolitical discussion that Matt has been dreaming of having since before HMN’s inception: 1995’s depressingly-still-relevant TALES FROM THE HOOD! This is one of the more difficult films for a show like ours to discuss, so hopefully we navigate the treacherous waters well enough to not sound like total idiots. This is one of the best horror anthologies out there, and still required viewing in 2019 – Clarence Williams III commands you!

The boys are back and nearly at full strength as the Neoecks is absent this evening. Fear not MatManiac’s the rest of the crew is live from the illustrious DigiLabs Arena and there is a lot to get into tonight.

As always we begin with the put over segment:

ROK – His weekend in Cali
Teek – Upcoming show at Valley Bar 10/14
G1 – Harold’s Chicken opening in Phoenix
Ran – NYC Comic-Con

Now let’s deep dive into some wrestling!!! The Wednesday night wars have begun and the crew asks “is this really a war?” And does WWE care about the numbers?  Smackdown premiered on FOX and we saw our champ Kofi Kingston drop the strap in less than 10 seconds?  Was that the right call and was Kofi’s eagerness to bring the fight to the beast incarnate a good move?  Oh and speaking of Brock a familiar face from his UFC days made his debut….do we care?  Smackdown also saw the return of The Great One who with some help from The Man laid out King Corbin!  The boys also talk about the debacle that was HIAC. Lastly before closing out the show we have a major announcement from Lead Booker Mega Ran!

Snack of the Week – Dani Fernandez

For our second October anthology movie, Brian once again shows how inscrutable his tastes are by hitting us with 1971’s ironically bloodless THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD. After Matt and Scott rip this one to shred, Brian explains that he plans to start his future children with this kind of movie on their horror journeys; so basically his kids won’t be horror fans after all…

With it being Spooky Season, the 70 Year Anniversary of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad AND the fact that Brooke and Andrew had never seen this classic cartoon… it seemed like a great time to watch it. Instead of our usual watching style they did a live commentary to the movie so find a copy of the short and watch along with us!

Neoecks: Dissect on Spotify
Teek: Phoenix New Times Two Time Rapper of the Year (Two Times!)
G1: Herstory in the Making – Young M.A.

Mat Maniacs welcome to another episode of the Mat Mania Podcast.

We loved the premier episode of Monday Night Raw in Phoenix AZ. Over all the show
was amazing and PYRO!!!! We hope Dominique feels better, and King Corbin gets a new throne, and
Rusev. C’mon Rusev get your house in order. Don’t let big ole bald head Bobby Lashley take your
girl. All this booking that is happening. What do you think so far of the season premiere of RAW?

We didn’t dive too much into AEW vs NXT, but we are excited over what is to come over the results.
Over all, Wrestling is Fun, and wrestling is cool. If you don’t like wrestling, well i dunno why you are listening to this podcast. Maybe it is just for the jokes and stuff, so thank you.

Check out Teek Hall’s new Song – Back to Back

It’s October, and we’re lifting our moratorium on anthologies for one month only, starting with the oddly forgotten NECRONOMICON: BOOK OF THE DEAD (1993), directed by the immortal Brian Yuzna, Christophe Gans, and Shusuke Kaneko! We are joined by Cyborg Joe of THE LETHAL WEAPONS all the way from Japan, your new favorite band and you just don’t know it yet. The star of the film is obviously Bruce Campbell, I mean Jeffrey Combs’ prosthetic nose, but there’s also a sick body melt (hey, it’s the TGRI guy!), sea monsters, and bat-aliens with brains in their tummies. It’s a good time all around, as Joe and the guys can attest (Brian is just a grump). Strap in for a month of anthologies, as well as 907.185kg of bonus content because it’s Halloweentime finally and fuck the customary system – metric 4 life!

Arguably the most biggest runaway success out of Fantastic Fest this year was Christopher Winterbauer’s coming-of-age-dystopian-comedy Wyrm. With a Yorgos Lanthimos directing Napoleon Dynamite aesthetic Winterbauer’s film is funny, strange and most importantly relatable.

If not for societies focus on loneliness being monitors by shock collars on every teen until they achieve their first kiss you could easily just think the film is a period piece in the 80’s. The clothing, the music and the focus of cassette tapes all pull us back to 2010’s favorite nostalgia decade.

When you step away from the 80’s style and the shock collars  what you’re left with is a beautiful and relatable story of growing up, loss and love. Our titular character Wyrm is the only person in his grade who still has his collar symbolizing his failure at finding love. The school board is understanding to his “developmental hold-up” given a car accident that killed his owner brother and put a classmate in a wheelchair but the student body still finds him strange.

While navigating high school and searching for his first love Wyrm fills a lot of his time recording his classmates memories of his brother so he can properly pay tribute to him. At this time I’m sure everyone reading this review is expecting a depressing film but Winterbauer skillfully navigates through these heavy themes with a fantastic dry humor that made this a true stand out film that will have a huge fanbase when it’s made available to wider audiences.

Below is my interview with the director at the film festival:

In 2012 Jeremy Gardener and Christian Stella made a name from themselves among horror fans with the ultra low-budget zombie film The Battery. I will be the first to admit that when I original watched the film I had mixed feelings. I was charmed by how the duo did so much with very little and while the dialogue was fantastic I found some scenes dragging. I’m sure the fact that by 2012 I’d had over five years of Zombie Fatigue didn’t head things.

I was apprehensive about After Midnight for this reason, but the concept was really an interesting one. Eventually intrigue took over and After Midnight jumped fairly high on my “To Watch” list of movies while at Fantastic Fest.

The film follows Hank (Gardener) as he deals with his girlfriend of 10 Years Abby (Brea Grant) leaving him with nothing more than a note in the Kitchen one morning. If that’s not hard enough every night some creature comes out of the woods behind his house and terrorizes him. No one seems to believe him about the monster, including the local sheriff who also happens to be his girlfriend’s brother.

The film manages to be Rom-Com with Horror elements and juggles all three genres so well that they all succeed in activating the intended emotions. The romantic moments are genuinely sweet, the horror elements are full of successful jump scares and the film is laugh out loud funny.

Using a non-linear storytelling to allow jokes (and scares) to have a stronger punch this is a movie that demands that you see it and even more so demands it be seen with an audience. For me it was the run-away hit of Fantastic Fest.

Below enjoy the interview I conducted with the team behind the movie
