Producer Matt is back in the teacher role to educate us on one of the founding members of National Lampoon; Doug Kinney. Doug took the Harvard Lampoon and transformed it into the National Lampoon. From there he basically found all the talent that became the original cast of SNL and cowrote Animal House and Caddyshack!

What is the best depiction of the North Pole in pop culture? There’s been so many of so many different styles we’ve seen be it lonely isolation, full blown cities or weird castles in the sky. But which one is the best?!

In all of our years doing Horror Movie Night, we’ve never sat down to talk about a Hammer horror… Until now. This week, we’re cracking open the coffin and dusting the sand from a lovely disembodied hand with BLOOD FROM THE MUMMY’S TOMB (1971). Shockingly, this is but one of 4 screen adaptions of Bram Stoker’s “The Jewel of Seven Stars.” We’re guessing this is the best one because it stars two-time Bond Girl Valerie Leon!

Christian folk group Sixpence None The Richer had an unexpected mainstream explosion with their song “Kiss Me”, after it was featured in the 90s teen film “She’s All That”. Beyond a few low charting cover songs, however, they quickly fell out of the public consciousness. This week, we’re joined by Russ Burlingame – author of the new book “Best Movie Ever: The Oral History of Elfont & Kaplan’s Josie and the Pussycats” – to discuss the band whose music will always be associated with Rachael Leigh Cook.

This week we are joined by Jennifer Zhang, the filmmaker behind Charon who joins us to discuss the problematic history of Circus and Sideshow Freaks. It is both fascinating history as well as one full of inhuman treatment. Jennifer breaks down why she is both horrified by these stories but also relate to some of the plights they experienced in her own life.

On Episode 59 of The Bulletproof Podcast we travel to Absalom as Chris and Chad discuss 1994’s No Escape starring Ray Liotta, Lance Henriksen and Ernie Ladd. A unique entry in the prison action subgenre, No Escape gets some much needed love as Chris and Chad discuss the badassness of Ray Liotta’s Captain Robbins, Stuart Wilson’s eccentric Walter Marek and of course the greatness of Lance Henriksen!

This week we discuss the BBC series Ghosts (currently on HBO Max) and one of their Christmas episodes “He Came!” Matt discovered this show through his friend (and fellow listener) Lauren and Dylan’s never seen it before this moment; let’s see if he likes it!

Ever wondered what a 1950s nuclear family in modern suburbia but are really giant shapeshifting bugs movie would be like? Well wonder no more, because we’re talking about exactly that this week as we excavate MEET THE APPLEGATES (1990)! This one is as weird as it seems so you know there’s a lot to unpack… Join us for the absurdity on another episode of Horror Movie Night!

Few bands have ever been helped more by a music video than OK Go. They had faith in their own music when their record label didn’t, and they took advantage of internet virality to launch their career. Unique, eye-catching videos continue to be their thing, but the choreographed treadmill routine of “Here It Goes Again” will forever be the legacy of the band among people who only know them in passing. Is it worth going the extra mile to listen to more of their music though? Tune in to find out!

It’s impressive that Dylan didn’t pull something with this stretch but since a New Scream Movie came out and the first Scream was released in December of 1996 … he’s decided that counts enough for us to discuss this horror film with zero Christmas themes on our Christmas podcast.

There’s been dumber ideas I suppose!!

But this review is PACKED WITH SPOILERS so don’t listen if you don’t want these films ruined for you.

There’s a saying we like to keep going around the HMN offices – “It’s Mummy’s Day somewhere.” In the spirit of Mummy’s Day, we invited our good friend Nate Lopez from 91 Donkey Lane to discuss the Lovecraft/King monster mash that is IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS (1994). We put on our bookreadin’ glasses and crack the covers of some Sutter Cane best-sellers to bring the apocalyptic giggles and maybe a wall of tentacle monsters. Side note, how do you get sharpie crosses off your skin? Asking for an insurance investigator friend…

1994 was a landmark year for both music and film. Somewhere in that whirlwind of Dookie and the Shawshank Redemption, the Downward Spiral and Forrest Gump, and The Blue Album and Pulp Fiction was LUCAS. No, not the 1986 Corey Haim movie…we’re talking about the Danish rapper Lucas, and his single “Lucas With The Lid Off”. The song was in regular rotation on MTV, thanks partly to a Michel Gondry directed music video. This week, Tony Hartman returns to the show to discuss this jazz rap / electro swing jam. Did we catch the vibe, or was he was a ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba ba-ba ba-blunder? Tune in to this week’s episode to find out!

This may not be the best of the best episode of The Bulletproof Podcast, but it is the Best of the Best episode of The Bulletproof Podcast. Chris and Chad look back at 1989’s Best of the Best starring Eric Roberts, James Earl Jones, Sally Kirkland and Phillip Rhee. Did Alex Grady help build the car that ran over his son Walter? Why weren’t the alternates present for the entire 3 months of training? Was Sonny the most worthless member of the team?

Since we’ve had our first snows in the Northeast we decided to discuss some of our fondest snow day memories and discuss how Dylan does his Snow Days!

Little did Scott know when picking this week’s movie, there are TWO films from 1990 called Metamorphosis and surprise! We collectively watched both, so we guess this is kind of a two-fer episode? There’s body horror aplenty, so don’t forget the paper towels and hand sanitizer for this discussion – it’s gonna get gooey…

We let the members of our new Patreon page vote for an episode, and they overwhelmingly chose Go West’s song “King of Wishful Thinking” from the Pretty Woman soundtrack. Did we listen to the talk of the town, or were we just trying to fool ourselves when it comes to one of the MOST adult contemporary songs ever? Tune in to hear us break down this simultaneously happy and heart-wrenching (emphasis on the WRENCH) pop jam.

It’s a new year, time to start thinking about what frat you’re going to rush and which popped collar douchbags you’re going to let verbally and physically abuse you in the name of brotherhood. Can we suggest Heta Mu Nu? We promise to only make you eat 1 butt-cherry and no calling people the f-word. Oh and the gooey ghost of Joey Belladonna may or may not be haunting our frat house so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Our first episode of 2022 is the 1990 straight-to-video PLEDGE NIGHT, a comedy-cum-supernatural slasher written and directed by a porn director, starring people who can’t act and featuring yet another Freddy clone killer apparition, but at least it’s set in the wintertime, which is the correct season for the actual Hell Week shenanigans we still somehow let happen every year at colleges across the US. Now clean up the mess we just made, pledgie!

When you Google the adjective “Cumbersome”, the first thing that comes up is the definition of the word, which is “large or heavy and therefore difficult to carry or use”. The second thing that comes up, however, is a giant YouTube thumbnail image of Seven Mary Three leader singer Jason Ross. Most people, in fact, instantly think of this 1996 modern rock single any time they hear the word, and this week’s guest Trevor Leonard is no exception. Are Seven Mary Three too heavy, too light, too black or too white, too wrong or too right? Tune in to this week’s episode to find out!

The results of our Black Friday poll are in and the winner is our inner child, because you voted overwhelmingly for TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES II: THE SECRET OF THE OOZE (1991)! Whether that inner child is still entertained by goofy pratfalls performed by martial artists in foam rubber suits is questionable, but the point is that we’re doing what we can to keep you coming back for more in 2022 as we round out this year with some wholesome nostalgia talk. We will be back next week with horror, but this week, Ninja Rap is born!

It’s crazy that we got 100 episodes in before talking about A-ha; so it seems like it was the only appropriate way to celebrate 100 episodes of the podcast but to take on Take on Me. Are they even a One-Hit Wonder? Matt will explain why it’s a bit of a gray area.
