We subjected ourselves to another Howling entry, this time THE HOWLING: NEW MOON RISING (1995), in which the director/lead actor of the last 2 tries desperately to connect the entire series into a cohesive timeline. Did he succeed? Perhaps, but at what cost? Our sanity hangs by a thread on this week’s show!

Imagine you’re an Italian filmmaker in the 80s. You’ve got 10k to make a sci-fi movie and you aim for Aliens… and then get sidetracked by ripping off Terminator… and your entire cast and crew have never even done a table read. No need to imagine, because that’s basically what you get when you watch SHOCKING DARK, aka Terminator 2 (1989)! We finally caved after years of putting off this listener pick and can confirm, yup it’s a movie. We have more questions now than when we turned it on and no expectation of ever having them answered. Let’s be confused together.

It’s not a specific style parody but it feels like it could have been part of the Footloose soundtrack; only it basically pre-dates the dance movie craze of the mid-80s! In the early 90s, London-based producer Geoff Wilkinson was given full access to legendary jazz label Blue Note Records’ entire discography to use samples in his project Us3. The resulting album Hand On The Torch mixed modern hip-hop with classic jazz, and on the heels of the first single “Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)”, the record quickly ascended to the top 10 on the Billboard charts. Today on the show, we dive into the rest of Us3’s music to decide if there should’ve been a few more biddy-biddy bops in the mainstream, or if this project was just too funky funky to enjoy more success.
