The holiday season is here once again. To celebrate, we’re discussing the bizarre case of The Waitresses, which are a band that we’re able to discuss on One Hit Thunder because they’re a one hit wonder in two different countries for two different songs. While “Christmas Wrapping” is now considered a Christmas classic, it wasn’t well-known in the US until many years after its release. Meanwhile, “I Know What Boys Like” was ONLY a hit in the States. This week, we’re diving into the short-lived career of this Akron, Ohio band to determine if they bring the holiday cheer or leave us with a holiday sneer.

Today is our 150th episode, so we had to bring the heat with an undeniable 80s jam. Spandau Ballet may have formed out of a love for the Sex Pistols, but their 1983 musical love letter “True” was inspired by soulful sounds of Al Green and Marvin Gaye. This smooth pop classic dominated the radio airwaves for years, but we needed to know more. Can Producer Matt Kelly pronounce their name? Is “True” really Adam Sandler’s favorite song? Did Spandau Ballet TRULY bring the one hit thunder? On this week’s show, we ask the important questions about this well-dressed band.

Bet you thought we were running low on Christmas movies to discuss. WRONG. There’s a little film you may have forgotten about that has a mind-controlled Santa fight, Christmas in Los Angeles AND the worst punk cover of Jingle Bells you’ll ever hear, and that film is TRANCERS (1984). Helmed by none other than our boy Chucky Band, this holiday fruitcake of a movie has some sweetness, more filler than anyone should consume, and a lot of nuts, so of course it hits the spot for your hosts at Horror Movie Night. Get in the holiday spirit or we’ll jump back in time and kill your ancestors!

December is here and Matt is finally having us discuss the Happy Christmas volume that he’s been talking up since Episode 1 of the show. He’s said in the past that this album holds a special place in his heart and it’s time for him to open on how and why!

We can only speak for ourselves when we say that few things evoke the spirit of Christmas like a reincarnated, murderous samurai slashing through the holidays in rural Wisconsin… To that end, we’re kicking off December with the insane, drug-fueled BLOOD BEAT (1983)! Did you know that roughly 40% of Wisconsin natives in the early 80s had psychic powers? Why doesn’t Big Science talk about this?? HMN will expose the truth… right after we finish this bottle of eggnog.

This week, return guest Matt Jurcevich joins us to discuss something that’s got US feeling insane in the membrane — the fact that we can categorize legendary rap group Cypress Hill as a one hit wonder. Despite having multiple high-charting albums and decades of widespread popularity, their 1993 single “Insane in the Brain” is the only one to cross over into the Top 20 on the Billboard charts. In this episode, we’ll break down their catalog, their vocal stylings, and even the awesome way they got banned from Saturday Night Live.

Listen, it’s Thanksgiving and also Matt’s pick… It was time he finally sicced his pet croc on us courtesy of Tobe Hooper’s EATEN ALIVE (1976). This fever dream of a giant killer animal movie is admittedly not very good but at least we got to watch the beautifully remastered Severin cut instead of a grainy VHS rip. Not to say we don’t enjoy a good VHS rip now and again, but for something like this, we want to really be able to see what an animatronic lizard eating the Phantom of the Paradise really looks like.

Against all odds, a song completely sung in German floated all the way up to #2 on the Billboard charts in 1983, rising above some of the biggest artists of the 80s. Even more surprising, the danceable pop gem “99 Luftballons” was actually a protest song about a theoretical nuclear war. This week, we’re joined by Cheer Up Dusty vocalist Justin Humenik to find out if we should all pick up a few Nena records with the money we’ve got, or if we should think of them and let it go.

Somehow Matt thought this was a Thanksgiving movie as a kid, but it’s undeniably absolutely nothing BUT a Christmas movie. It’s also the favorite Christmas movie of his Horror Movie Night co-host Kyle Kutcha who joins us to talk about this extra strange dark comedy.

This week filmmaker Levi Wilson joins us to discuss the extremely controversial parody Girls Just Wanna Have Lunch. Reportedly the Scotti Brothers forced Al to write this song and despite a few good funny lines you can hear the rebellion in Al’s voice throughout. While many think it’s pretty low-ranking for Al’s output, it’s actually one of Levi’s favorites. Can he convince us otherwise?

It’s Scott’s November pick so you probably guessed we’re talking cannihillbillies, this time taking a WRONG TURN (2003) with Eliza Dushku, other Eliza Dushku (Emmanuelle Chriqui) and White Guy Mannequin (Desmond Harrington)! Not that our expectations for the franchise were high after our disastrous watch of Wrong Turn 6 years ago, but even the first entry in the series has us scratching our heads wondering why this spawned as many sequels as it has. Time to hit the trails and find out on this week’s episode!

After two decades of pursuing a music career, a 30 year old Canadian singer named Alannah Myles scored a #1 hit in 1989 with “Black Velvet”. While her success continued for years after in the Great White North, she completely fell off the Billboard charts of the United States. This week, we try to determine if the blame for her US decline should fall on the lack of promotion from her record label, or if the rest of Alannah’s catalog just lacked that slow southern style.

This week it’s Matt’s turn to talk about something special about Christmas to him and he’s decided to make us super depressed with A Garfield Christmas Special.

This week John Wlaysewski joins us to discuss Al’s sci-fi new wave song Slime Creatures from Outer Space which was inspired by a very obscure Thomas Dolby song. While it may not be the most laugh out loud song in Al’s career it’s definitely one of the most unique musically!

Sometimes you look at a horror poster and wonder to yourself, “Do the CURTAINS (1983) match the drapes?” We’re here to tell you that sadly, no, the promises made by the poster are left unfulfilled by the end of your watch. The same can’t be said for the creepy casting-couch director character played by John Vernon, but sometimes you gotta just accept disappointment on the road to podcast stardom… Are we there yet??
