Longtime listeners (and probably even casual ones) know how much we love some aquatic horror, and this week is no exception as we plumb the depths for monstrous crabs with DEEPSTAR SIX (1989). While this one suffers from serious pacing issues – the first 45min is basically pointless – but once the Depladon rears its barnacle-y head and levels its googly eyestalks at you, it’s pure salty joy. Grab the sunscreen and Dramamine, we’re hitting the water this week on Horror Movie Night!

Synth pioneer Gary Numan was overwhelmingly bashed by critics upon his surge to the top of the UK charts in the early 80s. Music writers may not have been ready for Numan’s futuristic sound, but fans surely were. By the time he decided to take a hiatus from touring, he was doing multiple nights at Wembley Arena, not to mention opening doors for acts such as The Human League, Depeche Mode, and OMD. This week, we’re joined by artist Matt Gondek to dive into all things Numan, especially his new wave classic “Cars”.

The horror sequel you waited 20 years for… and then another 8 years of HMN picks for us to finally discuss… the better-than-expected PSYCHO II (1983)! While it apparently wasn’t a ton of fun to make the movie, it’s a surprisingly effective return to the Bates Motel as Norman has been released from prison and just wants to flip some burgers and drink some milk. But is his return to his childhood home going to make him kill again? Listen and find out!

In the Fall of 1998, Shawn Mullins took the radio waves by storm with “Lullaby” — an unforgettable song about the woes of a young girl in Hollywood. With its spoken word verses and falsetto-laden choruses, the song’s meteoric rise on the charts rivaled the likes of Britney and Celine, cementing itself into our collective subconscious for decades to come. This week, we take a look at Mullins’ career to decide if he really dug his way into our Soul’s Core.

No more teachers, no more books… except the Necronicom Ex-Mortis! School’s out for summer, and that means one thing for Scott: it’s time to enjoy the godfather of all “fighting inanimate objects” movies, EVIL DEAD 2 (1987). Instead of trivia and plot dissection, this week is pure nostalgia tangents, so let’s head out to the cabin in the woods and pop some champagne with your boyfriends in Horror Movie Night!

For some people, Thomas Dolby might be considered only a blip on the 80s music radar — the wild-haired, bespectacled Englishman with the song where someone yells “SCIENCE!” The more knowledgable music connoisseurs, however, know very well how much influence this new wave icon had and continues to have on legions of electronic music artists. This week, we’re joined by Huffamoose drummer Erik Johnson to discuss the long-term impact Dolby has had on music, the unforgettable music video for “She Blinded Me With Science”, and we even dive into Erik’s personal recollections from when Huffamoose played the main stage at Woodstock ’94.

High school can be a radioactive wasteland, especially when your water pipes connect directly to the nuclear power plant down the road… That’s just life in Tromaville, displayed proudly in this week’s movie – CLASS OF NUKE ‘EM HIGH (1986)! If you didn’t get enough gooey fist fights in The Toxic Avenger, then boy do we have a film for you. Also, there’s 3/4 of a super sick-looking reptile monster in the last 20 minutes. And biker punks. It’s Troma, let’s goooooo!

Marcy Playground’s “Sex & Candy” was a bonafide hit in 1997, spending an impressive 15 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Songs chart. Unfortunately, they were unable to come anywhere near the success of the song again. If you ask guitarist and vocalist John Wozniak, however, it was never his intention to write hit songs in the first place. This week, we play a game of dodgeball out on the Marcy Playground, as one of us is a fan and the other is not. Who thinks the band is disco super-fly, and who is casting devious stares in their direction? Stay tuned to find out.

This week in honor of the new Little Mermaid movie coming out, Producer Matt breaks down the history of the character from the original Hans Christian Anderson novel all the way up to the 1989 Disney cartoon we know today.

This week we are honored to be joined by musician, writer, former Mad Magazine editor and all round cool person Allie Goertz who joins us to discuss one of Al’s most unique songs. If you’re not paying attention to the verses of the song you could very easily think you’re listening to a jangle pop love song; but a quick look at the lyrics reveal a much more sinister song.

Sometimes we daydream about the people that watched Rosemary’s Baby and thought, “the world could use another NYC brownstone filled with evil geriatrics” and then got the funding to hire an ensemble cast (before or after their Hollywood careers) to make 1977’s THE SENTINEL. It’s not a great movie, but if it was, we’d have nothing to talk about, so Kyle understood the assignment this week. Pull up a chair and dust off your nun habit, it’s another week of Horror Movie Night!

Calling the Queen of Bubblegum Pop a one hit wonder just feels wrong. To Carly Rae’s cult following, it feels like she has released hit after hit over the years. A quick internet search of her Billboard chart success, however, reveals the shocking truth… “Call Me Maybe” is really her only mainstream hit. Regardless, here at One Hit Thunder, we know that an incredible and prolific career rarely has anything to do with charts, and Carly Rae Jepsen is no exception to that rule. This week, we’re joined by author Erik Brown to completely fanboy out over one of pop’s most likable artists.
