This year at SXSW a clear statement has been made that female directors will be widely represented within their film festival lineup. And despite many first-time filmmakers breaking through as a result, one such returning talent is Megan Griffiths who made her SXSW debut in 2012 with the Special Jury Award Winner, Eden. This time around Griffiths again provides one of the festival’s biggest highlights with her gripping new drama Sadie.

The 13 year old Sadie (Sophia Mitri Schloss) is being raised in a slummy small-town trailer park by her mother (Melanie Lynskey) while her personal hero and father is serving another tour overseas for the military. And while the marriage has become a loveless strain on her lonely mother, Sadie wishes for nothing more than a happy reunion between her two parents. Therefore, when Sadie’s mother begins dating a new neighbor (John Gallagher Jr.) from the trailer park, the teen channels her father’s tactical training and stops at nothing to put an end to their romantic affair.

Megan Griffiths’ hypnotic character study boasts exceptional performances, taut storytelling, and crisp direction. Youngster Sophia Mitri Schloss gives an unforgettable  turn in her title role, one that stands among the finest by any lead actress at the festival. Her onscreen metamorphosis seems so innocent and harmless at first, until her actions continue to grow more and more alarming leading up to the film’s resounding conclusion. There’s no shortage of praise to go around as the entire ensemble shines brightly and Griffiths impressive filmmaking abilities somehow managed to be outdone by her multidimensional screenplay. The characters are deeply written and developed, the dialogue is full of creative wit and compelling drama, and the overarching story is simple in nature yet robust in emotion. In an era consumed by gaudy superhero fluff and mindless blockbusters, Sadie serves as a wonderful example of the profound and effective impact indie filmmaking can have on an audience.

Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director, James Gunn, lends his twisted and unusual imagination with the screenplay for Greg McLean’s latest horror film, The Belko Experiment. In this wicked blend of The Hunger Games meets corporate America, 10 Cloverfield Lane‘s John Gallagher Jr. learns just how far human decency and compassion goes when society’s rules and structures are thrown out the window. So if you’re a horror fan with a taste for violent and visceral behavior, The Belko Experiment isn’t exactly groundbreaking material, but it definitely delivers on the gore.

Nestled away in the farmlands of Bogota, Columbia, a United States Government facility houses many local and American workers. Yet, something rings different when Michael Milch (Gallagher Jr.) notices heavily armed guards greeting employees at the front gate and turning away all the local workers. And not long after their work day begins, security panels turn the building into an inescapable fortress as a random voice comes over the intercom system informing all 80 employees that they’re now involved in a game of kill or be-killed.

The Belko Experiment leaves little to the imagination by putting its graphic R-rating to good use. If you’re seeking a grotesque movie experience filled with blood, guts and other unspeakable acts of violence, then director Greg McLean certainly delivers in that regard. Yet, it can’t be ignored that James Gunn’s writing is a bit fundamentally flawed. The audience is forced to accept that all of these workers would have allowed the government to implant tracking devices into their heads for their own safety abroad, something that clearly seems far-fetched and unfathomable. Yet, if you can withstand sporadic head-scratching plot points that are necessary to allow this deadly game to unfold, then The Belko Experiment will definitely please a niche audience. McLean’s film eases through its effortless 88-minute running time with escalating tension and a subtle darkly comedic tone that isn’t stressed nearly enough. Lead actor John Gallagher Jr. plays his role as the sensible and level-headed employee well. But when all hell breaks loose, James Gunn’s writing proves strongest through Michael’s clear character arc. The Belko Experiment offers a somewhat flat finale, but the brisk and brutal ride there is a treat for the sickest of horror fans.

Sometimes you stumble across the greatest treasures when you least expect it. As it turns out, the South By Southwest Film Festival Winner for Grand Jury Narrative Feature and the Narrative Audience Award, Short Term 12, is every bit as good as advertised. The independent drama journeys through a myriad of emotions on its way to a perfectly-timed finale, representing one of 2013’s finest features.

Grace (played by Brie Larson) is a supervisor at a foster-care facility. Nurturing and gentle, the youth in her care truly appreciate everything she does for them. Along with the aid of her co-worker boyfriend Mason (John Gallagher Jr.), the couple must navigate through the troubles at work as well as the problems in their own lives.

I’ll cut right to the chase, Destin Cretton’s Short Term 12 is a premier example of how impactful a film can be on its audience. Tender and sweet, you rarely find a movie as innately compassionate as this one. There’s plenty of evil in the world and, rather than trying to shy away from it, Short Term 12 stares it right in the eyes. Following a facility full of impressionable at-risk youth who find themselves teetering on the edge of transcending this evil or being consumed by it, the viewer is placed right in the center of these struggles. But it’s the aptly named “Grace” who shelters her own personal troubles by waking up every day and offering unconditional love to these children who so desperately need it. Brie Larson is the glue that holds the film together. Her Oscar-worthy performance is both mesmerizing and masterful. The gifted young actress is so unbelievable in the role that the audience becomes a part of her character. You’ll smile when she does and your heart will break alongside hers. However, Larson is far from the lone shining star. Her onscreen boyfriend, played by John Gallagher Jr., is almost equally as impressive. And in addition to an entire well-rounded collection of cast members, Short Term 12 succeeds in conjunction with a stellar script and fabulous direction from Destin Cretton.

While the indie drama tugs at the heartstrings with hopes of moving its viewers, the film drowns itself in a hopelessness only to culminate a little too gleefully for my liking. As Short Term 12 zips along, it feels extraordinarily authentic. Therefore, I found its resolution to be slightly bittersweet. “Sweet” in the sense that I left the theatre as uplifted as I should, and “bitter” in the sense that the finale feels forced and slightly unrealistic. But despite this minuscule blemish, Short Term 12 shines through and ends up as one of 2013’s most noteworthy films.

Many filmmakers break into the “biz” determined to make their audiences feel an array of emotions. Short Term 12 stands out as the premier example of such films. Gripping and moving there’s plenty to love about this little indie drama. It’s the type of movie that deserves to be viewed and enjoyed by the masses. Short Term 12 is a strong feature by all accounts and hopefully it will catapult Brie Larson to the stardom she deserves. Do whatever it takes and check out one of the year’s best films, Short Term 12.
