It’s Super Bowl week here at One Hit Thunder, and to celebrate, we’re playing fast and loose with the term “hit” so we can discuss multi-sport athlete turned musician Deion Sanders and his 1994 single “Must Be The Money.” If you were a sports fan in the ’90s, you knew how electrifying Prime Time was on the field, but did he match that intensity on the mic? Hammer seemed to think so, even if the public at large didn’t necessarily agree. Stay tuned so you can, at the very least, be impressed with Neon Deion’s sports accomplishments.

If there’s one thing we here at Horror Movie Night know, it’s that if you find a possibly-cursed item in the creepy shed of your new house, you should definitely gift it to your young child and pray it doesn’t bring your stepson’s deceased father back from the grave for revenge. Is that too specific or can you extract some sort of life lesson from it? Either way, we’re back in the most haunted town in America with AMITYVILLE DOLLHOUSE (1996) and it’s truly impressive the amount of blood they’ve squeezed from this stone. Between the ugly lamps and ominous clocks, it’s a wonder there’s any remaining furniture in the original house… Feel bad the next sucker to buy it for a steal (because we all know murder houses are way cheaper).

If you played Rock Band or Guitar Hero in the mid-2000s, you know DragonForce. If you mastered their power metal classic “Through the Fire and Flames,” you’d be the talk of any party (the talk being, “imagine if that guy could actually play that song on a real guitar instead of tapping colors on a piece of plastic”). Joining us this week is One Hit Thunder favorite Matt DiStefano to discuss this cult-favorite band and their one and only trip to the Billboard Hot 100.

This week we are joined by Bowling For Soup vocalist Jaret Reddick to discuss Al’s folk-y tribute to heartbreak with You Don’t Love Me Anymore! For years people say it’s a style parody of Extreme but we think that’s strictly because of the iconic music video, stylistically it appears Al dug into a much more obscure and personal reference point!

This week, we’re joined by my friend (and the only person I know who’s competed on The Voice) Jimmy Mowery to discuss one of his favorite songs from the ‘90s, Dog’s Eye View’s “Everything Falls Apart”. This quickly written song about a hangover was everywhere in 1996, and vocalist and songwriter Peter Stuart seemed to be a favorite of many of his more well-known contemporaries…so why did it all seem to fall apart for this promising band? Stay tuned as we investigate the band’s the back catalog and see if we can put the story back together.

If you’re wondering whether we’ve discussed runaway trains on this show already, the answer is yes, but nothing compares to the ride you’ll get on the BEYOND THE DOOR III (1989) Express! Absurdity, folk horror and head trauma are our destinations this week and that doesn’t even take into consideration the toy train scenes. If you haven’t watched this one yet, do yourself a favor and stream it on Shudder then listen to us choo-choo its praises on this week’s show!

If you played EA Sports video games in 2005—or if you simply tuned into the radio—you couldn’t escape Franz Ferdinand’s “Take Me Out,” a disco-inspired rock song with an unusual structure and an even stranger music video. Critics showered praise on this stylish band’s hook-laden dance music, and although the song only reached #66 on the Hot 100, it has become an inescapable classic that remains relevant even today. At the request of our Patreon supporters, we’re diving deeper into the band this week to understand what all the hype was about.

This week we are joined by Fright School and White People Problems co-host Joe Fejeran who has seen almost every version of the Matt Rogers’ Have you Heard of Christmas? show. We dive into the album Matt released in 2023 as well as Joe’s experience attending the live performances over the years.

Are all horror sequels drained of logic, like the blood of each batch of dumb teens hanging from the pointy end of a killer’s weapon of choice? Is it made more palatable if said sequel looks directly into the camera and says, “we get it, but also know what you want and we’re here to give you your fix, you little freak”? These are the kinds of questions we ask ourselves as we head to college with Sidney Prescott in SCREAM 2 (1997) as she tries to outrun her past by choosing the least likely major for someone who hates the spotlight: theater! Does it still hold up to Matt’s high expectations, or is will it be hazed to death by it’s fraternity brothers? Find out on this week’s episode of Horror Movie Night!

If you reflect on the joyous music that graced the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 2015, it would be hard to believe that people were engaged in activities beyond falling in love and relishing a warm breeze. No song illustrated this point more vividly than OMI’s “Cheerleader,” a whimsical tropical tune that soared to the coveted #1 spot on the charts. However, the question remains: why didn’t the US clamor for more of OMI, considering he undeniably had songs worthy of being soundtracks to fireworks and hula hoop sessions? This week, we’re joined by Tony Hartman to explore whether we can consider ourselves as cheerleaders for OMI’s career.

We’ve referenced author Lily Hirsch’s booked Weird Al Seriously quite a few times on the show so we were beyond thrilled to have the author on the podcast to discuss Al’s take on Gerardo’s “Rico Suave”. We discuss how sometimes Al’s parodies help us fix a song that’s lyrics can be off putting and Taco Grande is a great early example of that!

We kick off the new year with the oldest movie we’ve ever covered thanks to Kyle. You may be shocked by this pick, usually old black and white movies are exclusively reserved for the Kelly brothers but we’re sure Kyle had a reason to pick this one! If nothing else we get interesting performances from Universal legends Lon Chaney Jr. and Bela Lugosi when we discuss THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN!

Blending influences from around the globe, Pittsburgh’s own Rusted Root made their mark on music history with their unforgettable 1992 hit, “Send Me On My Way”. This joyous tune only hit #72 on the Billboard Hot 100, but the song’s prominence in movies, TV, and commercials has eclipsed its initial chart performance. This week, we’ll dive further into the story and back catalog of Rusted Root to decide if we’d like to hold their little hand or tell them to run.

Holy 1960s cultural commentary, we tallied the votes from our annual Black Friday listener poll and watched BATMAN: THE MOVIE (1966) as our last movie of the year. It’s a solid little time capsule to when the campy caped crusader was at the top of his spandex-y game but it definitely takes a specific palate to truly enjoy this one in modern times. Not saying that all Batman content needs to be a ultra-gloomy as Bale’s or Pattinson’s portrayals, but there’s a lotta slapstick to wade through here… Join us for our final discussion of 2023 or else the puns and rhyming will never stop.
