This week, we’re joined by Sarah and Maggie from the Unstable Topics podcast to discuss the unforgettable hit “I Love It” by Icona Pop. In the decade since its release, this song has remained a constant presence, gracing commercials, television, and the radio. Together, we’ll explore the mystery of Charlie XCX’s involvement in the song, share our emotional connections to it, and reminisce about the world of 2013, a time when this song made a significant impact on the music scene and beyond. Get ready to relive the magic and influence of this inescapable Swedish feminist pop anthem.

On another episode of Not-Quite-Horror Movie Night, our fearless leader Matt takes us on a trip through time and space to a place where everyone is significantly hairier than we already are. But not on the surface, rather BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES (1970) where the weird telepaths hang out. Just be careful not to touch their quartz-encrusted bomb controls, they HATE that…

It’s no surprise that Prince was a fan of Jane Child. After a bidding war between 14 labels in which she demanded complete creative control, this Toronto-based artist wrote, produced, and performed every note of her debut album. Her funky pop single “Don’t Wanna Fall In Love” skyrocketed to #2 on the Billboard Charts in 1990, opening the door of endless possibility for this Canadian badass with an unforgettable look. So why are we discussing her on One Hit Thunder? We asked ourselves the same thing. Stay tuned to find out.

Much like the behavior one would expect at a college party when the peer pressure is stronger than your better judgment, your hosts caved to the Patrons in our Slack chat and are gulping down TEQUILA BODY SHOTS (1999). Spoiler alert, they taste like salty regret and stomach juice. We’d never call ourselves experts in how to drink booze, but this is most definitely not how one does a body shot. That is, unsurprisingly, the least incorrect idea presented in this movie, so strap in for quite the headache after this week’s bender of a Dia de los Muertos episode of Horror Movie Night!

“I like big butts and I cannot lie.” No, that wasn’t a Winston Churchill quote. It’s the iconic first lyric of Seattle-based rapper Sir Mix-a-Lot’s 1992 smash hit “Baby Got Back”. While your grandma’s out cuttin’ a rug at the wedding reception to a song about anacondas and gettin’ sprung, it can often be forgotten that the song is actually an anthem of body positivity. His music tends to walk a fine line between well-intentioned and super horny, so this week, we’ll dial 1-900-MIXALOT and see if we can kick some thoughts about why he could never repeat the success of this song.

HMN’s Halloween tradition of picking a family-friendly movie for the holiday continues as we travel all the way to HALLOWEENTOWN (1998) in a flying bus that definitely needs a tune-up… While this one may be a staple in a large swath of America’s October rotation, your hosts sort of missed having it as a part of their childhoods. Does this leave us lacking the nostalgia to fully enjoy it, or are our viewing experiences untainted by memories of the Disney Channel’s heyday? You be the judge on this wholesomely spooky episode of Horror Movie Night!

Regardless of whether you know the name Norman Greenbaum or not, you most DEFINITELY know his hit 1969 song “Spirit In the Sky”. This uplifting single has appeared in countless movies, TV shows, and commercials, with its use showing no sign of slowing over five decades later. This week, we’re joined by Rock and Roll Candle Co. founder Samm Strangeland to get spiritual about Greenbaum, and decide if he should’ve kept pumping out hits OR if his goats just needed him more than we did.

We continue our Christmas Horror Coverage with a demented episode of the series Cabinet of Curiosities from Netflix last year. The 4th episode “The Outside” is a demented body horror episode about a beauty product received at a White Elephant gift exchange that warps the wearers mind.

On a totally not-blasphemous episode of the show, your HMN hosts take you on a black light body fluid-soaked trip to THE CONVENT (1999) and live to tell the tale! This forgotten gem has gotten new life thanks to Shudder and we’re here to spread the gospel of possessed nuns, Monty Python-inspired Satanists, and Adrienne Barbeau chainsmoking her way through every scene. If this hasn’t already sold you on the movie, maybe our discussion of it will – listen wherever you get your pods!

When you hear the name Positive K, you probably think of One Hit Thunder producer Matt Kelly, who is definitely one of the most positive human beings you’ll ever meet. Alas, we’re not talking about THAT Positive K, but instead, rapper Daryl Gibson whose early ’90s hit “I Got a Man” took the airwaves by storm. K’s upbeat vibe was so irresistible that even the legendary Aretha Franklin couldn’t help but be a fan. Also, you might want to break out some potholders because you could lose your grip when you hear which phrase Positive K possibly coined, only to see it rise to fame in the hands of another rapper years later. In today’s episode, we’ll decide if Positive K has the skills dat pay da bills or if he’s just crabbin’.

We got a Friday the 13th in October this year so you KNOW Matt had to pull the trigger on his favorite (?) of the franchise, FRIDAY THE 13TH PART V: A NEW BEGINNING (1985)! Also known as “the one without Jason,” this movie is pretty divisive in the horror community – as well as between your HMN hosts. There’s a lot to unpack and we’re not even going to camp this time around, so strap in and just enjoy the ride. We’re off to the nuthouse this week on Horror Movie Night!

In the Spring of 1983, ‘Til Tuesday transformed from a new band into the winners of Boston’s Rock & Rumble competition. After quickly securing a deal with Epic Records, they released their debut album Voices Carry. Thanks to regular airplay on MTV, the title track rose to #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Sadly, this unique band could never again match the success of the song. This week, we’re joined by writer, musician, and Aimee Mann enthusiast Daniel Corey to discuss why we believe ‘Til Tuesday’s voices should have carried them much higher up the charts.

It’s finally October and we’re here… for THE FEAR! This strange 1995 blend of psychological slasher and killer mannequin on the loose is a great time capsule to a time without cellphones but plenty of Christmas theme parks. Take it from us, if you ever get invited to a remote cabin to talk about what scares you, just politely decline and you won’t end up strangled in the attic on top of a pile of possibly-imaginary money. Easy!

You know that awesome Bruce Springsteen song “On The Dark Side” that actually isn’t Bruce Springsteen at all? That’s John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band, and I’d venture to say that I’m not alone in thinking it was The Boss for many years. We HAD to bring in some experts to shed some light on this wild sound-alike, so this week, we’re joined by Hal Schwartz and Flynn McLean of the None But The Brave podcast. These Bruce enthusiasts help us decide if we should throw thunder on these beaver boys.
