AMC Confirms ‘Preacher’ Series Coming From Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg

Briefly: Back in November it was rumoured that AMC was actively working on a pilot based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s Vertigo comic book, Preacher. It was also rumoured that This Is The End duo Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were tapped to write the pilot.

Today, AMC confirmed everything. The series is in the works, and Rogen and Goldberg are attached. Breaking Bad producer Sam Caitlin will act as show runner.

In case you need a refresher, “Preacher follows Reverend Jesse Custer, a tough Texas preacher who has lost his faith, has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned His responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making Him answer for His dereliction of duty. Accompanying Jesse on his journey is his former girlfriend and a friendly vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent. On his tail is one of the most iconic bad guys in print – an immortal, unstoppable killing machine named the Saint of Killers – a western lone gunman archetype whose sole purpose is to hunt and kill Jesse.”

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg said, “This is amazing! We’ve tried for seven years to work on Preacher and we’re so psyched AMC is finally letting us. It is our favorite comic of all time, and we’re going to do everything we can to do it right. Humperdoo!”

Series creator Garth Ennis added “Steve Dillon and I are very happy to see Preacher being developed for TV, which seems a much more natural home for the story than a 2-hour movie. Between them, Sony TV and AMC have brought viewers two of my favorite shows with Breaking Bad and Mad Men, and it’s exactly that kind of creative commitment and courage that Preacher needs. Obviously it’s taken a while, but Ken Levin along with Neal Moritz and his team refused to give up, long after the point when I myself grew skeptical, and their unrelenting enthusiasm for the project has gotten us where we need to be. I’m particularly impressed that Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin understand Preacher fully — meaning they get it for what it is, not some vague approximation. All in all, it looks like Preacher can now be brought to TV in a way that I’d previously not have thought possible, and I very much appreciate that Steve and I have been included in the conversation in the way that we have.”

The comic book series ran from 1995-2000, and was one of the very first series that I read from start to finish (while, of course, loving every second of it). As such, I am so, so, so excited to see the property finally leave development hell, and end up on the small screen (instead of the big one).

Rumor: AMC Working On A ‘Preacher’ Pilot!

Briefly: Remember all the way back in August when D.J. Caruso confirmed that he was still attached to the film adaptation of Garth Ennis’s Preacher?

That may not be the case any longer (which can only be a good thing). If BadAssDigest‘s sources are correct, the project may have found a new home at AMC… and it may actually come to exist.

The series could come from This Is The End writers Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen, which is certainly an interesting duo for this sort of project. Shortly after the rumour went public, Rogen released a pair of very hopeful tweets:

 

 
Yep, Preacher could finally be happening. AMC won’t say a word, but we’ll be sure to share anything else that we hear.

Geekscape Movie Reviews: This Is the End

Seth Rogen’s first legitimate major motion picture impact came in 2005’s The 40 Year Old Virgin. It’s hard to believe that Rogen’s stranglehold on the comedy market hasn’t even lasted a full decade yet. However, the actor/writer and now director uses his latest platform, This Is the End, to reiterate the fact that he’s not quite done yet.

When the longtime friendship between Canadian-born pals Seth Rogen & Jay Baruchel begins to slowly wither away, Baruchel takes one last trip to California to salvage the relationship. Desperate to include Jay in his new group of friends, Rogen invites his childhood buddy to a party at James Franco’s pad. But rather than spending the evening renewing their friendship and, from Rogen’s standpoint, building new ones, the party full of celebrities must find a way to survive the apocalypse.

Crude, vulgar and downright hilarious, This Is the End is a refreshingly pleasing comedic affair. While some pundits may argue that the film offers nothing more than cheap jokes and excessively immature humor, I would refute that writers/directors Seth Rogen and childhood friend Evan Goldberg stay loyal to their story. Even by the film’s satisfying conclusion (prior to the strange cameo-filled finale), This Is the End is a movie about “friendship”. Surely the jokes are overtly simple and frequently vile, yet they’re also plentiful and consistent. One huge selling point to the comedy is the fact that its characters are based on the real-life actors, actresses and entertainers we’ve grown to love over the years. In doing so, the cameo’s are absolutely hysterical and the viewer becomes transported into the story. Perhaps the finest one comes from Michael Cera. The scrawny and pale actor is uproariously funny playing the party animal role. Cera’s brief but impactful cameo is just one of many effective elements in the summer blockbuster.

Despite the fact that This Is the End is a worthwhile flick, its weaker elements certainly can’t be ignored. For example, the film’s midsection clearly drags on while the plot appears indecisive about where it wants to go. Therefore, the comedy feels every bit of its 107 minute running time. Moreover, since This Is the End addresses apocalyptic themes, there are a great deal of special effects needed to sell the feature. Some are convincing, but many aren’t. But although the movie includes a slowly progressing storyline and weak visual effects, This Is the End accomplishes its ultimate goal of generating a plethora of laughs.

The beauty behind This Is the End is the hilarious interaction between its celebrity stars. Danny McBride, Jonah Hill and Craig Robinson all deliver valuable supporting turns that aid in welcoming the moviegoer into the inside joke that is the film. With no shortage of laugh-out-loud moments and a purposeful “message” hidden somewhere in its moderately flimsy story, This Is the End feels like a summer comedy standout. If you find yourself searching for a fun-filled good time, I suggest taking a shot on This Is the End. Just make sure that you go in with tempered expectations.

Following the hilarious red band trailer from last week, Columbia Pictures has released the first clip from their upcoming end-of-the-world comedy, This is the End.

This is the End opens June 12th, and stars Seth Rogen, James Franco, Craig Robinson, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, and Danny McBride. It also seems to have cameos from everybody else in Hollywood.

I haven’t seen the clip, as it’s region-locked and I’m in Canada, but check it out below, and… describe it to me? Please?

Watch The Red Band Trailer For ‘This Is The End’

On December 21st of last year (remember, the day that the world was set to end?), a hilarious teaser trailer for This is the End released online to much fanfare. The teaser had Seth Rogen and James Franco in a bomb shelter, apparently after the apocalypse on December 21st.

Today, a red band theatrical trailer for the movie has been released. This preview gives us a much better idea of what (and who) to expect from the feature, which looks like an absolute blast.

Just one day before the world is yet again set to end (yeah right), Sony Pictures has released a teaser for another movie about the apocalypse.

This is no Roland Emmerich disaster film however, This is the End looks absolutely hilarious. The film stars James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Michael Cera, Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Danny McBride, Aziz Ansari, and Craig Robinson, and Emma Watson. What a cast!

Could This Be Judd Apatow’s Best? Watch The Hilarious New Trailer For ‘This is 40’

Before today, I had mixed feelings about how Judd Apatow’s This Is 40 would turn out. First of all I’m sure the film will be the most funny to people that have just hit or are soon to hit that age group (at 22, I’ve still got a few more years to go). Secondly, Knocked Up (which this film acts as a pseudo-sequel to) is my favourite Apatow film thus far, and a bad sequel would likely be detrimental to my feelings for the first film too.

I can lay those worries to rest. A new (red-band) trailer for the film has just been released, and it is freaking hilarious. Like I-just-shot-a-bit-of-Coke-Zero-out-of-my-nose hilarious. That shit burns, and I’m not even upset about it.

I met Yuri Lowenthal a few days ago at the Dungeons and Dragons benefit and we immediately hit it off. In voice over work, Yuri is the voice of the Prince of Persia in some of the most successful entries to the franchise as well as the voice of the popular cartoon character Ben 10. We get a chance to talk about his V.O. work as well as his video series Shelf Life, currently entering its second season on Youtube. I think you guys are going to love this guy and warm to him as quickly as I did!
