Sold Out at SPIEL 2025: Where Are They Now?

Every year, over 200,000 tabletop enthusiasts descend upon the cavernous halls of the Messe Essen for SPIEL. And every year, as the doors open, the race begins.

It starts as a brisk, polite power-walk under the watchful gaze of the door staff, but within minutes much of the crowd breaks into a fully fledged sprint. While some of these eager gamers are looking to grab a much-coveted seat at one of the hotly contested demo tables, many are rushing to insta-buy specific titles—driven by a cocktail of adrenaline, severe FOMO, and frantic BoardGameGeek thread warnings that a designer brought only 200 copies into Europe.

Sure enough, a small number of booths have queues snaking around the halls almost immediately. One by one, as the day goes on, “SOLD OUT” scrawls appear taped across display boxes, leaving a wake of crushed spirits and empty shopping lists.

As SPIEL 2026 approaches fast, we look back at six of the games we managed to play that disappeared before the doors closed at SPIEL 2025, and ask where they stand today.

Feya’s Swamp

  • The Hype: A reimplementation of an earlier game (Kaivai), co-designed by Helge Ostertag, who also co-designed mega-hits Terra Mystica and Gaia Project. This pedigree, combined with the charming theme of piloting swamp-dwelling creatures in boats through winding wetlands to build settlements and explore ancient temples, pushed pre-show hype to a fever pitch. This was easily the most anticipated game on this list.

  • The Reality Check: The gameplay is deeply satisfying, packed with tricky decisions and strategic trade-offs. At its core is a smart blend of role/power selection and worker placement, featuring a player board with four distinct tracks to chose from when upgrading. Player interaction is high, and the four-round structure keeps the pacing tight.

  • Where It Is Now: Feya’s Swamp sold out within minutes of the doors opening and remained notoriously hard to come by in the UK and US until around six months after SPIEL wrapped. While it hasn’t completely set BoardGameGeek on fire, it has garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews and sits comfortably at No. 11 among all games released at SPIEL 2025. I’ll definitely be bringing this back to the table for the foreseeable future.

The Hobbit: There and Back Again

  • The Hype: A Middle-earth themed roll-and-write designed by none other than the prolific Reiner Knizia. A blockbuster IP, a spiral-bound book with unique, eye-catching illustrations, and a master designer equaled a day-one sell-out.

  • The Reality Check: Roll-and-writes can easily fall into the trap of feeling like competitive multiplayer solitaire, but Knizia’s dice-drafting mechanism keeps player interaction and engagement high. Combined with a scenario-based campaign book following the familiar beats of the novel, this one had actual legs, with furry little toes at the end of them.

  • Where It Is Now: There’s no shortage of roll-and-writes or Tolkien games on the market. While it has been slightly eclipsed by the near-flawless The Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship (currently the highest-ranked release of last year), There and Back Again remains a standout in both categories, holding strong as the 5th highest-ranked SPIEL 2025 release at the time of writing.

Ghost Lift

  • The Hype: Japanese publisher. Small-box card game. Quirky theme. Cute artwork. Scarcity. Check, check, check, check, check.

  • The Reality Check: A card shedding card game where players ride a haunted elevator up and down between floors. When a player goes out, everyone else notes the remaining cards in their hand, as getting stuck with the same card multiple rounds spells disaster. Why is this so crucial? The game isn’t played until there is one winner, but until there is one single loser.

  • Where It Is Now: Sadly, this one didn’t quite live up to its promise. Despite some interesting ideas, the mechanics felt a bit janky in practice and caused games to drag. Public reception on BoardGameGeek tallies with our experience, sitting at a pretty mediocre rating. Ghosted.

Tornado Splash

  • The Hype: High-speed jet ski racing in a tiny box! This was another Japanese import, this time from Arclight Games, who brought Tornado Splash alongside Railway Boom and Snow Colony. Each day they released fresh stock of all three titles, and each day they sold out within minutes of the doors opening.

  • The Reality Check: Players play path cards from their hand to balance speed and control while carving around sharp turns and cutting off rivals. It captures the relaxed, humorous vibe of classic arcade racers like Wave Race 64, while backing it up with genuine strategy and player agency.

  • Where It Is Now: Tornado Splash remains a sought-after gem. Copies have been exceptionally difficult to track down post-fair (even in Japan), though a reprint looks imminent. It earned a Seal of Excellence from The Dice Tower and is widely considered a must-seek for fans of quirky, high-energy import card games.

Echoes of Time

  • The Hype: Co-designed by Simone Luciani (the mind behind Tzolk’in and Barrage), this tight tableau-builder promised a fast-paced Eurogame with a unique temporal conveyor-belt mechanism, all wrapped up under striking box art. Unsurprisingly, it sat comfortably in the top five most anticipated games of SPIEL 2025 pre-show.

  • The Reality Check: The San Juan-style hand management, where cards serve as both your engine and your currency, leads to delightfully agonizing choices. The true standout is the time track: you play anthropomorphic animal cards to a timeline, waiting for them to advance off the edge before joining your party to conquer Source cards. Furthermore these cards trigger unique slot abilities as they advance creating endless combo potential.

  • Where It Is Now: A solid game that packs a impressive amount of decision-making into a compact runtime without overstaying its welcome. However, a year on, it seems to be quietly dropping off the radar and hasn’t achieved legendary Barrage status. It is maybe worth mentioning that at SPIEL 2023 Ancient Knowledge implemented a similar time track a bit more effectively, albeit at the expense of a longer playtime.

Bohemians

  • The Hype: Portal Games has a long history of day-one Essen sell-outs, and they repeated the feat in 2025 with Bohemians. This charming card game tasks players with managing the whimsical, chaotic life of 19th-century creatives, balancing social events, muses, self-reflection, and… occasionally getting a real job to pay rent.

  • The Reality Check: At heart, this is a deck-builder where each round you construct a tableau representing how your own Bohemian spent their day. You solve a spatial puzzle by matching icons on adjacent cards while also chaining the printed card powers together. Simultaneous play keeps the pace snappy, though at the cost of relatively low player interaction. However, beyond the solid mechanics, every group I’ve seen loves narrating a colourful story out of what their Bohemian got up to that day.

  • Where It Is Now: Since last year, Bohemians has gained a second life via a digital adaptation on Board Game Arena and has a brand-new expansion slated for SPIEL 2026. While it isn’t dominating the top of the BoardGameGeek charts, it has firmly avoided disappearing into obscurity.

The Verdict

Looking back at last year’s class of day-one sell-outs, it’s clear that while a SOLD OUT sign doesn’t guarantee long-term legendary status, the thrill of the hunt is half the magic of SPIEL. For every hit like Feya’s Swamp that will likely keep coming back to the table for years to come, or a crowd-pleaser like Bohemians that turns its fair-floor buzz into BGA adaptations and brand-new expansions, you get to be right there on the front lines when gaming history is made.

And even if a flash-in-the-pan like Ghost Lift doesn’t quite go the distance, that’s the beauty of Essen. With over 1,700 new releases debuting across those massive halls last year, missing out on one white whale just means discovering three other incredible titles you didn’t even know existed. Whether you’re chasing the next Tornado Splash or stumbling onto a hidden masterpiece at a tiny publisher’s booth, there is simply no substitute for being on the hall floor when the doors open.

So as organise our empty suitcases and lace up our running shoes for SPIEL 2026, don’t fear the sprint – embrace it! Get your list ready, set your alarm early, and get ready to dive back into the greatest board gaming spectacle on earth.
