Although its only release in America came as a Virtual Console title on the Wii, Sin & Punishment (N64 version pictured above) has a pretty hardcore following here in the States. Nintendo has announced a follow-up to the Treasure-developed rail shooter. No details are available yet, but those who have played the original Tsumi to Batsu will know that the game is a perfect fit for Nintendo's current home console.

6 Nintendo Officially unviels the NIntendo DSi View Details

Zap! Crap!

Even before Nintendo announced it, the DSi had been the talk of the town. According to our Japanese correspondent, the DSi will be 12 percent thinner, and will get rid of the GBA slot entirely. The DSi will also include two built-in cameras (one reportedly VGA resolution) and music playback. It will add an SD card slot and internal storage (we don't yet know how much) to enhance its multimedia capabilities. The screens are now slightly larger at 3.25 inches, photos can be synced to the Wii Photo Channel, and the unit will include a free browser application.

2 Cave Story Coming to Wiiware this Holiday View Details
Posted on October 2nd 2008 3:45 AM by Shu

Zap! Crap!

Tucked inside a press release straight from Nintendo of America comes the downplayed news that Cave Story – the Japanese freeware cult-classic – is coming to "Wii this holiday season" via the console's often dubious WiiWare service. But it's not just a straight port, oh no. The indie Metroidvania title will have "new, exclusive content and features created only for the WiiWare version." No word on what those are, what Cave Story will cost or, really, when "this holiday season" it'll be available to play. But, hey, if you've got a "computer" at home, you can play it today. Without waiting. Or paying "money."

1 Brett Ratner Confirms His Involvement With God of War View Details
Posted on September 30th 2008 6:38 AM by Shu

Zap! Crap!

Late in July, rumors were circling around of Brett Ratner's involvement with a film adaptation of Sony's God of War. Speaking with UGO (via FirstShowing), Ratner confirmed those rumors when he listed the film, along with the fourth Beverly Hills Cop and the Hugh Hefner biopic Playboy, as "waiting for the greenlight to come in." Maybe the green light is being held off because of the lawsuit against Sony and David Jaffe filed by Bissoon-Dath and Jennifer Barette-Herzog for supposedly stealing many of their ideas. It's also worth noting Ratner gave no indication as to whether or not he will be directing the film and/or acting as producer, so don't start pointing those pitchforks just yet. Although, it's cool if you want to start sharpening them.

3 Green Lantern Gets the Green Light? View Details

Via EmpireOnline.com & FirstShowing.net

In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape his sight. Let those who worship evil's might, beware his power... Green Lantern's got the green light!

For comic book fans who were beginning to worry that DC was flagging behind Marvel in the movie adaptation stakes, news reaches us from First Showing that the long mooted Green Lantern flick is finally scheduled to start shooting in Spring 2009.

Producer Donald De Line, has revealed that a new draft of The Green Lantern has been turned in, and while nothing is “confirmed” they’re “gearing up to start shooting early spring.”

Now that's quite an acceleration in production, particularly with no stars or director yet attached, but DC is riding high from the success of The Dark Knight and can surely pull out any number of big guns to make this revelation a reality.

For those of you not versed in the DC 'verse, the Green Lantern corps are a universe-protecting force granted power rings which gives them greater control over the physical world (as long as their will power remains strong). The comic book canon has seen a number of Green Lanterns come and go and come back again so which character will make it to the big screen is anyone's guess.

1 Blade Runner sequel in development? (Don't panic!!!) View Details
Posted on September 30th 2008 4:55 AM by HiroProtagonist

Zap! Crap!

Via TotalFilm.com & SlashFilm.com

It’s been 26 years since Ridley Scott brought the world Blade Runner and ever since, people have been talking up the idea of a sequel. But even in this era when any classic film is fare game for a remake or a follow-up, it has remained untouched. But according to Eagle Eye co-writer Travis Wright, it might not stay that way.

We’d encourage you to strictly file this under “rumour”, but Wright was talking recently at a scriptwriters’ screening of the Shia LaBeouf thriller and mentioned that he’d been working on several treatments for a Blade Runner sequel, according to Slash Film.

And before you start building into a froth of outraged fury, bear in mind that nothing official has been developed. Neither Wright nor producer Bud Yorkin (who actually worked on Blade Runner) has the rights to the film.

Action Plans

Despite its unofficial status, the project is apparently moving forward with Yorkin and Wright overseeing pre-visualization for action sequences should they be needed to help the pair pitch to Warners.

2 Marvel announce their Release Slate & Dates View Details
Posted on September 30th 2008 4:34 AM by HiroProtagonist

Zap! Crap!

Via EmpireOnline.com & Variety.com

Yesterday, it was announced that Thor – the next Marvel A-lister to get the movie treatment – had at long last attracted a director to replace Matthew Vaughn. That director was Lord Sir Kenneth Branagh, MBE OBE CBE BA (Hons).

And today, it was announced that Thor has bagged a firm release date – July 16, 2010.

The announcement comes along with news that Marvel Studios has renegotiated its distribution deal with Paramount – the latter will now distribute Marvel’s self-produced product over the next few years.

That includes the likes of The First Avenger: Captain America, due on May 6, 2011, the hugely ambitious Avengers movie on July 15, 2011, and Iron Man 2, which has now been moved from April 30, 2010 to May 7 2010.

That puts Jon Favreau’s sequel up against The Chronicles Of Narnia: Voyage Of The Dawn Treader. Or, at least, it will for a while – our guess is that Disney will move the third Narnia film quick-smart.

The deal with Paramount is beneficial to both them and Marvel. It gives Paramount guaranteed product at a time when their deal with DreamWorks has come to an end, and Marvel gets to pay them less of the grosses (8% as opposed to 10%) generated by their movies.

2 Transformers, Iron Man 2 & Y: The Last Man "To Contain IMAX Elements"? View Details
Posted on September 30th 2008 4:20 AM by HiroProtagonist

Zap! Crap!

Via EmpireOnline.com & Variety.com

Those of you lucky enough to have seen The Dark Knight on Imax screens this summer know that Christopher Nolan shot the film's six big action scenes in full Imax for maximum mindblowing impact. Well, Hollywood's never one to let a good idea die, so it looks like Michael Bay, Jon Favreau and DJ Caruso may follow suit on (respectively) Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Iron Man 2 and Y: The Last Man.

To date, The Dark Knight has taken over $60 million on Imax screens, making it clear that this is a format worth bothering about (especially since ticket prices there are higher, which the studios approve of). Also, action sequences in full Imax were freakin' awesome. And Michael Bay, f'r instance, is never one to back away from a chance to show explosions in the most freakin' awesome format possible, even if the cameras are a little more unwieldy than the normal sort.

The plan is that Bay will film "at least three action setpieces" in the format, with work on Transformers 2 well underway already. Favreau and Caruso have expressed an interest in taking a similar approach on their next big films, but since both of those are in the early stages of development, there's no firm word on their plans yet.

3 Russell Crowe to play Robin Hood & The Sheriff of Nottingham? View Details
Posted on September 29th 2008 5:14 AM by HiroProtagonist

Zap! Crap!

Via EmpireOnline.com & MTV Movies

Ridley Scott is a big fan of Russell Crowe, so much so, that for his next flick, he's apparently giving the Aussie actor not one but two roles.

On the promotional trail for their latest collaboration, the political thriller Body Of Lies, Scott has let slip that his long-gestating revisionist take on the Robin Hood legend, Nottingham, will feature Crowe in a dual role as the legendary robber-of-the-rich-and-giver-to-the-poor and his sheriff nemesis.

Speaking to MTV's Movie Blog, Ridley Scott said: "He's playing both. [Crowe's dual roles would be] "a good old clever adjustment of characters. One becomes the other. It changes."

In terms of what that actually means, we've yet to discover. It could imply Scott intends to remake Fight Club in a forest, but we reckon the idea is that the Sheriff of Nottingham created the persona of Robin Hood to tackle those evil-doers who live outside the law (kinda like The Dark Knight for medieval times).

1 Zack Snyder to develop Games for EA? View Details
Posted on September 29th 2008 4:50 AM by HiroProtagonist

Zap! Crap!

Via EmpireOnline.com & Variety

Zack Snyder is clearly a man who doesn’t know the meaning of ‘downtime’.

Not only does the director still have to finish Watchmen in time for its release next March, but he’s got about (insert comedic random number here) of movie projects currently at various stages of development. Oh, and he's also overseeing the creation of his brand-new drinks range, Zack Snyder's Snack Cider. Probably.

Oh, and even with all that on his plate, he’s signed a deal with Electronic Arts to develop three games for them. Where he’ll find the time, we don’t know. He must have a Time-Turner, or a pimped-up Delorean.

No details are currently available on any of the games, but given Snyder’s taste in movies, we’d imagine they’ll be epic in scope, and will have stunning visuals. The current plan is that EA will own the intellectual properties, but that Snyder could turn any of the three games into movies via his Cruel & Unusual Films banner, which he runs along with his missus, Deborah, and Wesley Coller.

2 Kenneth Branagh To Direct Thor? View Details
Posted on September 29th 2008 4:47 AM by HiroProtagonist

Zap! Crap!

Via EmpireOnline.com & Variety
Verily, news has been brought forth that shall compel thou to pinch thyself - Kenneth Branagh has been lined up to direct Thor for Marvel Studios.
That's right, according to Variety, the darling of luvvies and one-man Shakespeare machine is about to sign on the dotted line and breathe new life into the Asgardian Thunder god of comic book lore.
Now we never saw that coming but now that we've had time to digest the news, we have to say that it does actually make some kind of make sense.
With a propensity to speak in iambic pentameter and displaying a flair for the overly dramatic, the hammer-wielding one seems to be a perfect fit for Branagh. Although we're pretty sure that the iambic pentameter will be ditched for the movie version.
Having taken the place of previously attached director Matthew Vaughn, Branagh will still be working from Mark Protosevich's script which - last time we checked - takes place almost entirely on Asgard and introduces the God of Thunder as an arrogant young sod who needs to grow into his powers and learn how to be a man. It'll be interesting to see if Branagh will change any of this.
The movie is scheduled for a June 4, 2010 release.

2 California Scientists Design Working Tricorder View Details
Posted on September 28th 2008 9:26 AM by Shu

Zap! Crap!

Scientists at the University of California have created what is, in effect, a Tricorder. They're calling it a much more modest name (Universal Detector), but the facts of the matter are clear: You'll be able to point this thing at other things and figure out what they're made of. There's one tiny problem with the device, if you'll pardon the pun. In layman's, totally unscientific terms, the device spits out Spanish to a group of people who only speak English. In other words, the device, while sound in theory, needs a system that can decode the light signatures it produces.
