Ms. Mahan and I were having a conversation over FB messenger regarding 007. Molly has been watching all the Bond’s in order and says that so far he’s raped 2 women. Do to my love of Bond, James Bond I don’t want to look at him as a rapist. A man forcing himself on a women in 60′s cinema seems to be a common theme I’ve noticed. What do you guys think, is Bond a rapist?

Also, what’s your favorite Bond movie?

Yes, he is a rapist by the very definition of what rape is. That is, fornicating after a person has not only explicitly said “No” and STRUGGLED against him, but has not verbally said, “Yes.” It doesn’t matter if she was alright with the situation after (like Pussy Galore is) or not (as Patricia clearly is not). I understand why this upsets people–I don’t want Bond to be a rapist, but given definitions and facts of the situation, it’s true. While I can appreciate Bond being a product of its time (a time where women seriously lacked agency), for people to ignore or brush it off as “Oh, it was the 60′s” or even, “But I don’t want Bond to be a rapist!” can read as offensive. I don’t think Bond is evil for the act (per se), or even that he himself sees himself as being a rapist, but that doesn’t change the fictional fact that he is, or how those women–if we view them as more than mere characters and plot points–might feel.

But hey, Bond isn’t the first fictional rapist whom I have loved, so …

While I haven’t seen all the Bond films yet, my favorite is still Casino Royale (starring Daniel Craig). It was the first Bond movie to really get me interested in the character as more than just a bland pop culture icon. Now that I’m watching Classic Connery, I think Goldfinger wins (rape n’ all!).

Goldfinger is a great one. It features the introduction of the DB7, which is a car that I lurve. THAT’s right, I lurve it

I saw my first James Bond movie, Gold Finger, at the age of 5 in England and was hooked ever after. Next was Diamonds are Forever at the age of 6, and it went on from there. The spoof version of Casino Royale with Peter Sellers, Woody Allen and David Niven. was also in there and to be honest I think it had a lot to do with my loving the entire franchise. Seeing Mohawks jumping out of Super Fortress bombers using wig-wams as parachutes really bent my brain. That movie really needs to be seen after taking in some THC. I would probably say that those first two are my favorite bond movies though.
On the subject of Bond being a rapist, I’d have to agree, he hasn’t been portrayed well in film has he.
As most of you know I’m a huge Gerry Anderson fan and my one regret is that Gerry’s script for the action scenes of Moonraker were never made, that just made me sad.
